On August 11, the House of Miles and the Creative Exchange Lab are coming together to lead a discussion about the future of the famous jazz musician's childhood home.
Miles Davis revolutionized jazz. But before "Kind of Blue" and "Bitches Brew," he was a kid who lived in a modest house in East St. Louis. If you didn’t know that, you’re not alone.
On the evening of Thursday, August 11, you can meet some of the folks behind House of Miles: Miles Davis Memorial Project, an effort to make Davis' house and East St. Louis a destination for music fans and history buffs. Jasmin Aber is executive director and co-founder of CEL Center for Architecture + Design Stl. She is facilitating Thursday’s event alongside House of Miles, a nonprofit raising money to restore the home.

Inside the shell of a modest house in East St. Louis, there is nothing to let a visitor know that one of the nation’s most noted musicians once called it home.
The interior of the one-story structure is skeletal — all bare studs and dust. But when Lauren Parks and Jasper Gery Pearson are inside, they can see the space where a young Miles Davis got his start in life, years before creating the music that would make him one of the biggest names in jazz. They hope to turn the trumpeter’s childhood home into a museum and educational space that will inspire children.

There was a deep puddle the width of the entire dirt road, so Dr. Andrew Theising, a political science professor at Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville, wheeled his car over the gravel shoulder instead.
He was taking a reporter on a mid-autumn tour of East St. Louis and no tour of East St. Louis would be complete without going down Kansas Avenue, to the corner at North 17th street, to see the childhood home of Miles Davis. As the car rolled back onto the road, the famous house came into view.
"Oh, no," said Theising. "Oh my God."

Though he made a name for himself in New York City, legendary trumpeter Miles Davis never forgot his roots. The son of a dentist, Davis spent his formative years in East St. Louis, Illinois—which is where he first began honing his craft and where, on his 13th birthday, Miles’s father presented him with a brand-new trumpet. Though the jazz great’s childhood home has been vacant for several years, a nonprofit group known as HOME (short for House of Miles East St. Louis) is planning to turn the storied property at 1701 Kansas Avenue into a museum and music education center for children.
